Dr. Allouche’s father started producing the original formula, now called 1970, in the 1970s. While P50 is the tentpole of the brand, the 1970 formula contains phenol, a compound that is no longer used in personal care products in Europe, but is still used in the United States. Phenol is an exfoliant and numbing agent that also has antimicrobial qualities. Devotees of the original formula swear by it. Today, 2 of the 6 Lotion P50s for the face contain phenol: Lotion P50 1970 and Lotion P50V 1970. What are the different formulas of Lotion P50 Toner for the face?

Lotion P50: Lotion P50 is ideal for Skin Instants© prone to seborrhea and/or keratinization or thick skin. It is a multi-purpose lotion which exfoliates, purifies, cleanses, sanitizes and regenerates the epidermis. This version of P50 contains Sorrel extract that is sebum regulating. This is the strongest exfoliant out of all the Lotion P50s. Lotion P50 V: Lotion P50V is ideal for devitalized and/or lacking tone Skin Instants©. It is vitamin-enriched and gently purifies, tones, smooths, moisturizes and helps maintain an acid pH.

Lotion P50 1970: Lotion P50 1970 is ideal for stronger, thicker Skin Instants©. It is an exfoliating lotion that gently purifies, hydrates, tones, controls sebum and balances the skin, visibly improving many common skin conditions including white-heads, blackheads and symptoms of rosacea. This P50 has weak acid and strong base meant to rebalance the skin when it is sick or in this case has a lot of acne. It contains phenol which is an antibacterial and numbing agent. People that suffer from a breakout or acne can utilize this formula to ease any pain and kill the bacteria in a matter of hours.

Lotion P50 V 1970: Lotion P50V 1970 is ideal for mature and dehydrated Skin Instants©. It is the vitamin-enriched exfoliating lotion version of Lotion P50 1970. This particular formula also has phenol to kill bacteria and it is vitamin enriched for those that have mature and dehydrated skin. It also prevents and treats ingrown hairs, making it ideal for pre- and post-shaving care.

Lotion P50 W: Lotion P50 W is idea for thin and/or sensitive Skin Instants©. Lotion P50 W is a multi-purpose exfoliating lotion which gently purifies, soothes, moisturizes and rebalances the pH of the epidermis. W stands for "weak" or "washable." This formula is meant for sensitive skin or first-time P50 users, and contains Arnica extract which is for soothing and for a more gentle exfoliation feeling.

Lotion P50 PIGM 400: Lotion P50 PIGM 400 is ideal for uneven and dull Skin Instants©. It is an exfoliating and lightening lotion which gently purifies and helps regulate melanin synthesis, to restore luminous skin as well as a uniform and clearer complexion. It contains Dulse Extract which is derived from seaweed and gives an anti-dark spot action platform. This is the lightest exfoliant out of all the P50s.
